Yesterday, Hugo Chavez passed away. While I’m not interested in any political debates, it’s noteworthy here because, well, Chavez was a huge baseball fan, going so far as to call Luis Sojo after every Venezuelan ballgame during the World Baseball Classic.
And as pointed out by Matthew Callan at Amazing Avenue, Chavez’s appearance at Shea Stadium in 1999 is plenty bizarre as well. Starting from his coming out in full uniform and glove and ending in the 14th inning, with Bobby Valentine getting the boot for wearing a fake mustache and glasses, it’s a game that will go down in history for all the wrong reasons.
It’s something you should probably read.
