Babe Ruth died 65 years ago, on August 16, 1948. Two days later thousands of people queued around Yankee Stadium to pay their respects and view the legend lying in repose. The following day, August 19th, his funeral Mass was held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on a hot, rainy day. During the Mass one of the pallbearers, former Yankee Joe Dugan, whispered to Waite Hoyt, “I’d give a hundred dollars for a cold beer.” Hoyt replied, “So would the Babe.”
